Prøvestenen is a research project exploring whether existing buildings can be transformed into housing that operates within planetary boundaries while meeting the requirements of the Danish Building Regulations, BR18. The project investigates how an existing office building on Amager can be converted into homes based on a living space of 25 m² per person.
The existing building was originally constructed by American Gulf Oil as a workshop and office facility, with a concrete structure and masonry infill panels. Today, it is used as office space. Through the project, part of the building will be transformed into a prototype home, demonstrating how existing structures can be adapted to meet contemporary requirements while significantly reducing the need for new construction.
Once completed, the prototype will serve as a showroom and testing ground for solutions that can be applied to future transformation projects. Prøvestenen brings together strategic partners from across the construction industry, including clients, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and third-party research and validation by DTU and BUILD. The project is supported by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency’s MUDP programme.
